An access log is a comprehensive list of all the files which were accessed by the visitors of a given Internet site. Every single file that was requested in some way shall be listed, so if you have one webpage with three embedded pictures, one video and one embedded text file, for example, the access log will contain a total of six entries - one for every of the six files which were accessed when the site visitor opened the webpage. A log typically contains the file name and path, the date, in addition to the visitor’s Operating System, worldwide web browser and IP address. Sometimes you may also find the referrer Internet sites that sent the visitors to your Internet site. The data that an access log file features is in human-readable plain text format. It can also be processed by special software on a personal computer and used to write reports on the efficiency of a website, independent of the web stats your web hosting server may have generated.
